Caring person saves skinny stray cat only to be turned away by every local shelter, until one wholesome hero steps up to give her a furrever home: 'I went from bawling my eyes out... to smiling again'

You would be surprised how much politics play a role in animal adoption. You would think that animal shelters would take any animal that needs help, but that's where you'd be wrong. We once read a story of a purrson who rescued a puppy who was just outside of the shelter's "jurisdiction", and even though they had space, they refused to take the poor pupper based on a technicality. 

The reality is, though, that most shelters are already overrun or over capacity. They simply can't keep up with the number of stray animals, and there isn't enough demand to adopt them since many people like to buy pets. 

That's where this story starts - a caring purrson saved a skinny stray cat from their work, and after deciding that they couldn't keep them for themselves, they approached local shelters to take the sweet baby girl in. However, she was refused from every shelter because of overcrowding. She didn't want to release the cat back outside (especially with this terrible winter weather), and just when she lost all hope, a wholesome hero stepped forward to pawsitively save the day. The hooman not only works at an animal shelter, but was willing to foster her until they found her a furrever family. It's a Christmas meowracle!     I found this cat at my job and unfortunately after some back and forth I won't be able to keep her and every single shelter I called in the area won't take her or are fully booked and if I do bring her she'll "be taken to the county" aka be put to sleep.

  • You know this person is a cat purrson because they specifically took a picture of the toe beans to share with us. They know how much we yearn for the beans. No one else would understand, except someone who understands the pure purrfection that are cats' toe beans.

    She's so young, thin, and may be pregnant (she's getting spayed tommorow) and my other options are just to put her back outside ( I don't want to do that), give to a local cat lady( she's difficult to get into contact with), or put her back where I found her and hope she doesn't get hit by a car. What should I do

    MOD 6h ago Speaking as a kennel tech: If you can, see if there is a vet clinic that will house her, it will be the safest place for her if she is truly pregnant (We adopt out cats once they recover, I'm hoping a clinic near you is the same)

    While a "local cat lady" may seem like a safe option, I have seen numerous cases of cats come into my own clinic with distemper and other contagious diseases. Cat houses are hot spots for infections and not the ideal place for a pregnant cat or a cat recovering from a spay.

    In her current state, putting her back where you found her will most likely be a dh sentence, especially if she is recovering from a surgery or birth.

    shaolin... I'll take her. Need to get her to Milwaukee somehow. Edit: before I do anything locally or close to me I'm going to wait and see how this situation unfolds because if something falls through for them locally I am going to adopt this cat. I just want to say I will give it a permanent loving home.

  • This is why we love cat people - they will do anything and everything to help a cat in need. This purrson doesn't even live in the same city, and yet, they're willing to find a way there to give the fur baby a furrever home. It's truly heartwarming.

I went from bawling my eyes out to assuming the worst to smiling again, all in the course of an hour.     I have reached out to r/shieldmaiden21, and the wheels are in motion to find her a forever home. However, like most situations like this, nothing is guaranteed, but I'm remaining positive for my little Xena (Zee- na, yes, I named her, don't judge me lol).     SurreptitiousSpark 12h ago Can you post on local FB groups or PetFinder? You can also possibly look at local subreddits to see if anyone can take her. Charge a rehoming fee though to help weed out people who want cats for nefarious purposes.

    SweetChickk4 • 11h ago You did the right thing by getting her spayed and keeping her safe from the street. That is a massive first step. Reach out to some smaller, no- rescues; they often have great foster networks and aren't listed on the main shelter websites.

If you don't find anyone who can take her (though it looks like you'll be able to ♥) my father lives about 50min away and has a good rapport with the shelters in his area (he does a lot of TNR and feral cat help) so I can always see if he'd be able to find a place she could stay.
